The ECOWAS Regional Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE), the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the International Industrial Biotechnology Network (IIBN) and QUINVITA, a global industrial crop technology and knowledge provider for Jatropha, have launched a major strategic study on the potential for sustainable production of novel bio-energy crops in the ECOWAS region. Goal: Identifying the suitability of the ECOWAS region for the commercial/outgrower cultivation of novel energy crops The strategic study will: 1. Assess the potential for increased food production and utilization of non-food/feed residue/waste for bio-energy production from selected food crops; 2. Identify ‘go’ and ‘no-go’ regions for 5-8 novel bio-energy crops within the 15 ECOWAS countries, taking into account available land for agriculture, forestry and other environmental impacts; 3. Identify 3 potential pilot projects for specific regions in ECOWAS countries with a potential for sustainable production of 10,00-15,000 hectares of a specific bio-energy crop, and 4. Provide a sustainability assessment of potential projects taking into consideration social, economic and environmental aspects of the bio-energy crops and their integration with food production, social and environmental factors. Chile, India, NigeriaCanada is contributing $200 million in fast-start financing to the Clean Technology Fund (CTF) of the Climate Investments Funds (with $100 million delivered in Canada's fical year 2011/12 and $100 million in 2012/13). The Climate Investment Funds are a pair of funds to help developing countries pilot low-emissions and climate-resilient development. Canada was already a leading contributor in the Pilot Program for Climate Resilience (PPCR) of the CIFs, with $100M provided as a grant over 2008/09-2009/10. The CTF promotes scaled-up financing for demonstration, deployment and transfer of low-carbon technologies with significant potential for long-term greenhouse gas emissions savings. Consistent with a decision of the CIF Board, Canada's contribution to the CTF will support the investment plans of projects in Chile, Nigeria and India.CanadaCaribbean, Latin AmericaClean Technology Fund (CTF) Mitigation 100.000CAD2012FY 2011/2012
