The ECOWAS Regional Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE), the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the International Industrial Biotechnology Network (IIBN) and QUINVITA, a global industrial crop technology and knowledge provider for Jatropha, have launched a major strategic study on the potential for sustainable production of novel bio-energy crops in the ECOWAS region. Goal: Identifying the suitability of the ECOWAS region for the commercial/outgrower cultivation of novel energy crops The strategic study will: 1. Assess the potential for increased food production and utilization of non-food/feed residue/waste for bio-energy production from selected food crops; 2. Identify ‘go’ and ‘no-go’ regions for 5-8 novel bio-energy crops within the 15 ECOWAS countries, taking into account available land for agriculture, forestry and other environmental impacts; 3. Identify 3 potential pilot projects for specific regions in ECOWAS countries with a potential for sustainable production of 10,00-15,000 hectares of a specific bio-energy crop, and 4. Provide a sustainability assessment of potential projects taking into consideration social, economic and environmental aspects of the bio-energy crops and their integration with food production, social and environmental factors.  Agroforestry - The general objective of the programme is to mobilise a network of government organisations, international institutions, donors, NGOs and private sector bodies for a well-coordinated and coherent investment in research and development in agroforestry and EverGreen agriculture in Southern Africa. An EverGreen Agriculture Action Network is envisaged to be managed by a small secretariat to allow stakeholders to share best practices, generate more resources, resolve policy conundrums, and achieve economies of scale. The specific objectives of the programme are: 1) To create a network of organisations and innovation platforms to coordinate research and development in agroforestry; 2) To review experiences gained from past research, to refine and optimize EverGreen agriculture, to distil experiences into policy recommendations, and to share these widely; 3) To encourage policy makers to develop policies which facilitate the wide-scale promotion and adoption of EverGreen agriculture; 4) To mobilize extension staff, farmers and other land users to scale up EverGreen Agriculture across southern Africa. 5) To investigate and pilot alternative farm income streams from trees to optimise the economic, environmental and social outcomes of the various locally-adapted EverGreen Agriculture systems 6) To build the R&D capacity of national institutions (including tertiary institutions) in EverGreen Agriculture.BelgiumTBD Flemish Government  1.500EUR2013Starting 2012
